I am struggling equipping a indie DI/finishing-suite around Scratch, and hopefully less than 10k€ projector, for rec709, p3 and film.

Steve, how do I decide between the i1pro and the hubble. Do you have a table of the errors of the i1pro as well?

Hi Nepomuk,

Finding a projector that can do P3 for under 10K€ is unlikely. The better option is to go for a good Rec709 projector with good blacks/whites and contrast, and then use LightSpace CMS to make a LUT to convert fro Rec709 to P3 or DCI XYZ. This is a far better workflow. I always use TI Dark Chip projectors, not DILA versions - they are unstable and have very poor blacks.

For film grading, just use a film print emulation LUT - again via LightSpace CMS and a film profile of your lab.

As for Hubble and the new i1 Display Pro, the Hubble is a lot faster, and has better black reading capability. But, for the price the i1 Display Pro is very good value. I often suggest getting the i1 Display Pro and seeing if it is good enough for your application. If not, then get a Hubble as the cost of the i1 is low.

But, I have both, and always use the Hubble.

This workflow was my first thought.But, how much would I need to spend for getting close to a kodak gamut? Or at least p3? I would really love to to grade for film....

Somewhere someone claimed "Rec709 has an approx 50% overlap area with film, while P3 is approx 75%".
Fantastic would be a database of the maximum vectorspaces of all high end monitors and projectors where you can display them on top of each other in an java applet and calculate the overlap, and including their tolerances during operation. Together with error values for the probes on the market one could actually find the right equipment for the job.

Rec709 and Kodak Vision overlap is approx 75%
P3 and Kodak Vision overlap is approx 85%.

But, the areas of overlap are different, so the numbers don't mean a lot... And the out of bounds areas are colours that are rarely used in the real world.

To see the various overlaps use LightSpace CMS - it shows this in various ways.

As for a P3 projector - the Cineo82 is one of the most cost effective IMHO.

Lightscape! Its what I imagined a CMS would do. I did only indie docs so far, interesting new world.

The projector is still an unknown. I contacted projectiondesign, but I don't know which one I can or want to afford. I mean, extreme saturated colors aren't my style anyway...

Considering your budgets you are better off going for a good Rec 709 projector like the Cineo 32 and then as Steve suggests use LightSpace CMS to make a LUT to convert from Rec709 to P3 or DCI XYZ.

I have used the Cineo 32s a fair bit for colour grading and they are very easy to maintain and calibrate.

The Cineo 82s are in a higher league thatn the Cineo32s but they are the most cost effective P3 projectors around.

I assume a for a small screen LED wider gamut projector would be appreciated by many these days.

Depending on the screen size - LED projectors tend to not be bright enough...
