Steve:
All DI systems i have ever used have an option for re-scaling between data and video levels.

Steve, can you explain what you mean? I'm new to grading, and would like to understand the difference between 'data' and 'video' levels in that context.

Thanks,
Shane

Have you read the website page regarding Data vs. TV Legal levels?

That should answer most questions on the subject.

Thanks Steve,

The web page was helpful, but I'm unclear as to when TV levels are appropriate? Like, is TV levels needed when you build a DVD, or BluRay? Or do they tayke full range and the player handles the conversion? Or is TV levels a moot point for DVD and BluRay on modern HD TVs? Or is it just for broadcast? In other words, when do you know when to convert to TV legal levels? Are there standards for when, or is it on a case by case basis based upon who you're giving it to?

Thanks,
Shane

All TV, and any associated systems to deliver TV images, are TV Legal.
That means everything.
No delivery for TV viewing is ever full range.
And yes, that includes all DVD and Bluray discs.

There are full standards available for all this, if you check the EBU, etc.

Hello everyone what an interesting thread. I am approaching this from a slightly different perspective (research) but hoping some of you might be able to advise. I have some standard definition sRGB video and want to find out how much of it would benefit, if it had been shot in wide colour gamut. To do this I want to scale up from sRGB to P3 and then count how many pixels are outside the sRGB range. Does anyone know how I would go about doing this?

Any help much appreciated.

Felix
