Hi
This forum has appeared at a good time! Here's my chance to ask the question - what do you think of the Penta 32" 10-bit LCD? We're looking at this because ticks all the boxes - it's very good value and a little larger than most grade 1 grading monitors. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Many thanks and good luck with the forum, Steve.

Hi Jamie,

I have to say that we are fans of Penta displays.
We have worked with Penta and are presently involved in some very specific development with them, so do know the displays well.

All I can say is I prefer them to other display options out there - many of which are a lot more expensive.

Cheers,

Steve

Hi Jamie

I own a Penta 24" inch HD2Line Pro Display and it is pretty impressive. Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad, India also have a 24"inch HD2Line Pro in their DI suite.

It is one of the more economical Grade-1 grading Monitors with a robust build quality. They are one of the few manufacturers who offer large size Monitors. In fact the 32" was the last additions to the Pro range as they took a while to find the right Panel that satisfied all the Grade-1 specs. (They are very quality conscious company)

As Steve says, Light Illusion has been working closely with Penta and we are very happy with the development team as they are constantly listening to feedback and looking to improve the Display further.

Cheers,

Sundeep

Anyone know what the video delay is on these monitors? Is it less than 1 frame, 20 odd milli secs?

Hi Jamie - I have to say I'm not sure of any delay. It's not something I've ever noticed, so I guess its negligible... I'll see if I can get a figure from Penta directly.

Thanks Steve. It's something somebody mentioned as a possible issue with their older displays. We have an old plasma here which is always a frame out of sync and I don't want to get into adding audio delays.
I'm sure it's fine but it's worth checking

Ah - our posts crossed. Thank you for that info. At first glance, that looks like 1080i 50 would delay by a couple of frames. That seems to be a major issue? How are other customers dealing with this? Is it possible to monitor the audio through the Panta, does it have internal speakers with an audio delay? I don't think I'd want to use that though...?
Thank you

...Of course, that's a couple of fields not frames - which is not so bad. Anything within a frame should be OK. I'll need to figure out exactly what 'Fast' mode is...
Thanks again

Another thought... I notice a couple of grade 1 monitors now offer DCI-P3 colour space in addition to Rec709 etc. This could be really useful, to be able to grade knowing you can see the full DCI space and then apply a LUT for Rec709 deliverables? Why have Autocue and Flanders Scientific not made a bigger deal of this great feature on their monitors? And should I be bothered that it isn't available of the Penta?

I have tested a lot of the monitors that suggest they can do P3 - not one can...

There are few suppliers of the actual screens used - the variation between displays is mainly in the back electronics - but the screen sets the actual max parameters, so there is little variation, and as I say, none I have tested can do P3.

And close just isn't good enough - at all.

Hmm... Interesting. Thanks for the response, Steve.
I've got a Penta 32" on loadn right now. It's nice. There are a couple of issues but I'll see how I go. And I think I'll get an Autocue (or a non-branded 'Bon' which is the same?) in as a comparison.
Thanks again
Jamie

There is new 'software' for the Penta soon to be released for calibration with LightSpace CMS, etc. be sure to ask Penta about that...

Will give the monitor easy calibration capability.

I had the Penta on test for a few days but other jobs got in the way and I was unable to get the time to do all the tests I'd hope to do. My initial impression was:
It's nice and big (maybe I don't need it quite that big for my room, though I did want to find something bigger than 24");
It's great to have the confidence that what I see on the screen is what's in the signal, not something being added/altered by the display;
Viewing angle - as soon as go go off axis the blacks get a slight blue cast - is this normal for LCDs? (My domestic Panny doesn't do that);
The purity of a white colour field wasn't very impressive - and there was a slight fall off at the edges, depending on viewing angle;
In 'field' deinterlace mode there is at least one frame delay (as numbers above show) but it will show inter-field flicker on a still. Even in this mode, crawling text smears quite badly.

All this may be no better /worse than the other 'grade 1' LCDs, so I want to test the Autocue 24" before we buy.
