I see the system is integrated with Konvision monitors. Can you tell me how they perform compared to FSI, Dolby PRM, and Sony X-300 for rec709 and P3 applications real world?

Specifically the KVM-1760D vs the DM170 comparing to the DM250, PRM4220, and X300.

I was working with X300s but got laid off, I have a DM250 but I need to travel. So I'm considering either a KVM-1760D or a DM170.

I'd love to know your thoughts on Konvision in general for high end grading, as well as your thoughts on the flanders best LCDs.

Also, were I to use BMD decklink HDMI output instead of SDI, would this open me up to a world of good monitors for cheaper, or just open a host of issues?

Thanks!

Every display you list is very different.
It is impossible to make any direct suggestions, as it depends on your needs and requirements.
Only you can define what display meets your needs.

And using HDMI is irrelevant.
The input cable has no impact on a display's accuracy.

But both FSI and Konvision, as well as many other display manufacturers, make very good displays, well suitable to grading work.

Thanks Steve, I guess doing calibration you prefer not to take sides? To be sure some monitors have a more accurate and translateable rec709 than others. I had tried for instance a Flanders CM240 and as you get towards "black" the backlight shows through, t he calibration weakens and the colors get muddy. It was great on bright pictures but not accurate on dark pictures, always trying to fix issues that weren't really there/that were in the monitor. Unlike the Dolby which fell off to its slightly lifted black with neutrality, and still translated well to punchier monitors too.

Do you not evaluate these kinds of things? Only calibration success numbers? And e n then what is your threshold DE to say something is a grading monitor, out of curiosity?

I see that the aforementioned Konvision is 2/3 or less the price of the Flanders, and I wonder if the quality level is competitive and Flanders is selling a combination of reputation and lifetime calibration, or if it's actually a lesser product.

Given that I normally work with whatever the top monitor of the day is, it's difficult to assess monitors I haven't even seen, in a budget range.

So I thought maybe you'd have more insight into that process. I also know a big part of the Flanders price is the SDI build out, and wonder if I could get something HDMI based that was still broadcast quality...

Any given backlight technology has its own issues.
we always assume professionals know and understand that, and therefore do not make comments on the backlight any given display uses.

And as stated, the hardware connection means nothing with respect to the quality of the display.
But, if you do not know how to manage HDMI, and its associated issues (EDID for example) you can suffer a multitude of issues that SDI never has.

And as you can see from our website, we do not perform display evaluations.
There are too many variables that mean one display can be suitable for one user, but not another.
We leave that to others.
