ACES Linear vs Traditional Linear: the What-and-Why?

Hello all,

I'm trying to get my head around ACES and am wondering what ACES specific linear data/files might be and why they should exist.

I am from a VFX background and I have always understood Linear to mean that the data/image is just a physically correctly captured and stored. Basically it should just be a measure of how many photons hit that sensor cell/pixel. (ignoring debayering here)

How can anything be more linear than that?

On this page about ACES they talk about some ACES specific linear EXR's. http://shootdatapost.com/blog/2014/5/16/aces-in-10-minutes

What would be different with this format and say an exr derived from a DSLR raw file, or a exr from a compunded set of raw exposures combined for higher luminous dynamic range?

When I look at ILM's openEXR page there is no new exr format and the latest one is from 2014. I see no mention of ACES.

Does anyone know what the difference between traditional Linear EXR and ACES Linear EXR would be?

Cheers
Fred
