CR-300RH Probe

Colorimetry Research CR-300RH Spectrophotometer

The Colorimetry Research CR-300RH is a compact, ultra-high resolution spectrophotometer with a 2nm bandwidth and 0.8 nm/pixel optical resolution R&D grade / reference instrument.

Overview

CR-300RH Probe

The Colorimetry Research CR-300RH is a compact, ultra-high resolution spectrophotometer with a 2nm bandwidth and 0.8nm/pixel optical resolution. This is a very high specification, and is for ultra critical colour applications.

The 2nm spectral bandwidth of the CR-300RH is a requirement of narrow bandwidth displays, such as laser based projection.

Uniquely, the CR-300H has a large 20+mm spot size, with small divergence angle, making it ideal for contact and non-contact measurement of all displays and projectors.

The CR-300RH designed for all display types, and can measure all projection - including laser based - as well as all luminous display technologies, and excels in low light, high accuracy for measurement of colour displays including DLP, D-ILA, SXRD, plasma, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), organic light emitting diodes (OLED) displays, in contact and non-contact modes.

The CR-300RH is of very rugged construction, made of machined aluminium and stainless steel, with all optical components fixed to ensure that no optical misalignment can occur, and weighs 2.5 pound (1.134kg).

All CR-300RH probes are calibrated using NIST traceable calibration standards at a colour temperature of 2856 Kelvins, using a laboratory grade scanning double monochromator and high accuracy filters of known transmittance and chromaticity. Essentially, no other spectroradiometers are used during manufacturing and Q.A. because none of them are as accurate as a laboratory grade scanning double monochromator.

LightSpace CMS Compatibility

The CR-300RH is an R&D grade / reference instrument, and in reality is beyond the needs for FIlm & TV display calibration. The CR-250RH is recommended for use with LightSpace CMS as it provides a high level of accuracy, enabling pre-calibration of Tristimulus probes for very accurate final profiling, at viable cost.

Spectroradiometers can be used for direct profiling, but relatively slow speed (and often poor low-light capability with lower quality Spectro's) can mean they are not ideal for profiling with large patch sets, as used when performing highly accurate calibration, as with LightSpace CMS.

The CR-300RH has been designed specifically for the professional calibrator, providing a large spot size with contact measurement combined with a small divergence angle that keeps the measurement spot size within desired dimensions for distance calibration, as with projectors.

The rubber hood allows the probe to be positioned against screen surfaces, providing a shield for for stray ambient light.

Recalibration/Re-certification

The CR-300 should be factory recalibrated/re-certified every year to two years, depending on usage and storage, or when obvious issue are found (after physical shock to the probe for example).
Cost is $700 USD, plus shipping.
Contact Colorimetry Research to schedule recalibration/re-certification.

LightSpace CMS Integration

As with all probes, the CR-300RH operation and function is controlled via the 'Options' menu, accessed via the Calibration Interface, or Display Characterisation windows.

The CR-300 has two sets of variables that are directly associated with the probe - the Speed options, which control the maximum auto exposure time, and Sync Frequency, which controls the synchronisation of the probe with the display's refresh rate.
(This obviously ignores settings that are generic, such as Extra Delay Time, Probe Matching, Probe Offset, Luminance Units.)

CR-250 Options

The options are:

  • Speed: sets the exposure time.
    1=Slow: 30 sec exposure + 30 sec dark measurement
    2=Normal: 7.5 sec exposure + 7.5 sec dark measurement
    3=Fast: 3.75 sec exposure + 3.75 sec dark measurement
    4=2xFast: 1.875 sec exposure + 1.875 sec dark measurement
  • Sync Frequency: defines the sync frequency of the probe, with None being the default, although Manual can be used if the refresh rate of the display is known. Auto is not used.

Note: if a changes is made to the probe settings you need to take a reading with the probe to have the settings remembered by the probe.

For further information on the additional setting with the 'Options' menu see the Profiling Manual page.
