Waveform monitoring for the DI process is an additionally critical part of generating high quality results, especially for Video deliverables that will be rigorously inspected - and especially for German distribution. If you've ever been through this process you'll know what I mean.
For DI grading a high quality waveform monitor & vector scope is also a key 'creative tools' for the colourist, enabling correct colour balance, levels and saturation to be maintained throughout a project.
This means that for DI applications waveform/vector monitoring can be split into two main areas - Creative Control & Technical Accuracy.
Creative Control
The creative need for waveform/vector monitoring is to help the colourist keep continuity throughout a project, for example ensuring black levels are consistent, which is critical for 'film' projects due to the shadow profile of the print D-LogE curve. A small error here will show dramatically in the final film print projection.
Technical Accuracy
The need for more technical waveform/vector monitoring for the DI process comes with the additional video deliverables requirement, where HD and SD versions have to meet stringent QC parameters.
The OmniTek XR waveform monitor is one of the best available, and Light Illusion has specified its installation at a number of DI facilities throughout the world, including MotionFX in the UK, Condor Cape in South Africa, and Avion Post in the Czech Republic.
