MAKING SENSE OF COLOUR MANAGEMENT...
Within the Colour Space Conversion options there is also the ability to generate LUTs that show where Out-of-Gamut colours exist in the image viewed. Out-of-Gamut colours are those that are either not correctly viewable in the display system colour space, or will not translate correctly to the desired destination display colour space.

For example, in the above image an Out-of-Gamut LUT is being generated from a film profile when images are displayed on a Rec709 display system.

The Out-of-Gamut LUT takes any colour value that is outside of the display or destination gamut and shows it as an inverted colour at 100% value, so the error can be easily seen.
All colours that will be correctly represented are shown monochrome.
Out-of-Gamut display
In the above image all colours that are out-of-gamut are shown as a colour invert, and at 100% value. From this you can see that even in the dark areas of the image there are colours that will be incorrectly represented, even though in the real image the variation will be small, as there is little actual colour in the dark areas. But, it is better to know where all errors may be found.
