The following are some examples of before and after images graded by Steve for a feature film called Les Absintheurs (The Absinthe Drinkers), a film directed by John Charles Jopson, and helps show why DI is more than just colour correction... The final images were generated on the one DI system (iQ Pablo) with no additional VFX equipment.
To see the changes hover over the initial graded image with your cursor.
The graded final has a new sky added and the far hills removed as the clearer blue sky suggest less haze and greater visibility than the original image.
The graded final again shows a replaced sky, and this time with the power lines also removed. It would have been easier and cheaper to have relocated for the close-up side-on shots, except that this was a single day's shoot for this scene and the light was fading fast, so a 'fix it in post' decision was the right one to make in this instance. And by using the correct DI system (not one only capable of colour correction) both the sky replacement and power wire removal were performed easily (by Steve Shaw) within the DI session - not a separate VFX one!
The graded final has an 'evening approaching' look...
The graded final shows a bright and airy painter's studio.
