Colour Measurement & Automated LUT Building

To place orders for any Light Illusion products please see the SHOP pages.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR COLOUR...

It is very important for any colour critical environment that the underlying display devices are accurately set-up, or no LUT will ever work correctly, so some form of measurement probe is required to set the correct initial brightness and colour temperature.

This is something that we have seen as a problem with many existing calibration systems, where the initial set-up accuracy generated just isn't good enough. With the Calibration Interface of LightSpace it is now possible to verify just how accurate (or not) a monitor really is before LUT management starts.

MAKING SENSE OF COLOUR MANAGEMENT...

The Hubble probe, and the more cost-effective range of i1 Probes from X-Rite, as well as the PR-655/670, Minolta CS-200 and Klein K-10 probe, Sencore OTC1000, are an ideal addition to any colour critical environment, and in combination with LightSpace CMS enables accurate brightness and colour temperature setting to be achieved via display device measurement and profiling.

Hubble and LightSpace CMS

Hubble (and Sencore OTC1000) is designed for measurement of any display technology found in DI environments, from monitor displays, including LCD, CRT and Plasma, to projection systems, both film and digital, and provides highly-accurate results to guarantee colour calibration.

For more specific information on the Hubble Probe please click Hubble Probe

The Jeti 1211 Spectroradiometer, Klein K-10, Minolta CS-200, Sencore OTC1000, and PR-655/670 probes are also supported by LightSpace CMS.

Jeti 1211 Spectroradiometer

The Jeti 1211 is a miniaturized and fast broadband spectroradiometer, ideal for all display systems used within the post-production and broadcast industries, and works directly with LightSpace CMS.

PR-655/570 probe

The Photo research PR-655/670 SpectraScan is the most widely used spectroradiometer in the world, ideal for all display systems, and works directly with LightSpace CMS.

Minolta CS-200 probe

The Minolta CS-200 probe is a high-end colourimeter that can measures all luminous display technologies, such as Projection, Plasma, LED CRT's, etc.

Klein K-10 probe

The Klein K-10 probe is specifically designed for LCD displays, but can measures all luminous display technologies, such as Plasma, LED & OLED, CRT's, FED's, etc.

The cheaper X-Rite i1 range of probes are more cost effective when the calibration requirements are not as critical - matching vfx workstations for example. And the new i1 D3 Pro is an especially interesting probe.

The range of probes LightSpace CMS presently supports includes:

  • Hubble
  • Jeti 1211
  • PR-655/670
  • Minolta CS-200
  • Klein K-10
  • Sencore OTC1000
  • i1 Display Pro
  • i1 Pro
  • i1 Display 2
  • i1 Display 1
  • i1 Display LT
  • ColorMunki (not spectro version)

Calibration Interface - Option

Calibration probe integration with LightSpace CMS provides the ability to use a range of probes both to check and calibrate a display device very accurately by matching values from a given colour space - Rec709/P3-DCI-D55/P3-DCI-D65/sRGB/XYZ, as well as profiling multiple displays and building LUTs to match the measured profiles.

The following diagram show the major components of the Calibration Interface, with CIE diagram including target colour space, in the form of circle triangle and target circles, and the actual measurement values show as plotted crosses.

The red patch to the right is the target calibration colour, and clicking it launches a larger target patch for any connected probe to use for profile measurement, and can be re-sized as required when undocked from the main software window.

Hubble Interface

The drop-down menu to the right, below the small colour patch, allows for the selection of the desired floating colour calibration patch - white; red; green; blue, and secondaries, with the addition of grey scale patches to check colour space tracking over the full brightness range. The target colour value is displayed as a circles within the CIE diagram - combined with the selected colour space gamut triangle - allowing for the monitor calibration to be altered dynamically to match the actual measured value, as shown by the displayed crosses compared to the aim circles.

The slider to the right of the CIE diagram show the aim and actual measured brightness values, either in FtLs or Nits (cd/m2).

Quick Profile
Quick Profile enables any display to be checked prior to, and after, calibration to make sure it is as accurate as possible.

After a quick profile the CIE diagram will show the actual measurements compared to any selected target. Using the tabs to the left of the CIE display you can chose to look at the profile Gamut and Gamma independently.

Network Connectivity
The Network Manager & Calibration Client allows the Calibration Client to be used on separate PC, Mac, and Linux systems, connected to the system with LightSpace software active, allowing for the calibration of monitors not directly connected to the LightSpace PC system.

When connected and calibration measurement is initiated the calibration client window will show the same display profile patches as the main LightSpace CMS software - making remote monitor calibration easy.

Display Profiling and Profile Management (Auto LUT Building) - Option

The LightSpace CMS Profiling & Profile Management option is probably the most important component of the system, enabling fully automated display profiling with a supported probe, and automated LUT generation from the generated profiles.

The process is very easy to understand, and is initiated from the Display Characterization menu. When selected this menu opens a window to allow selection of the cube size to be profiled.

Display Characterization

Select the size of the profile to be performed, and when activated each flat will be presented in turn and measured, using the network Java App if required.

For Display Independent Profiling profiling of a display that cannot be connected to the LightSpace CMS PC directly or via a network connection (an SDI driven system for example) the software provides for the calibration flats to be exported as a dpx sequence of frames. These frames need to be made into a sequence of 3 seconds duration each, and run in rough sync with the main software generated flats.

When profiling is complete the profile will be saved in the 'Manage Colour Space' menu, and can be accessed via the 'Manage Colour Space' button.

Manage Colour Space

To automatically build a LUT from the generated profiles select 'Convert Colour Space' from the 'Tools' menu, and select the profiles (colour spaces) to match to/from.

Auto LUT Building

The above image shows a calibration LUT being generated to match a display to a film lab using Kodak 2393 print stock. The display was profiled using 4913 patched! Eeek indeed!!!

When the LUT has been generated the standard tools of LightSpace can then be used as necessary to modify the LUT. See the LightSpace CMS Manual for operational instructions.
