Light Illusion has been involved in a wide range of digital "film" projects, from full Digital Intermediate features (both film and digital in acquisition) through trailers, commercials and promos, to VFX shots and title sequences.
The one overriding criteria has been the use of digital "film" technology rather than traditional film processing and editing or low resolution video post-production techniques.
For more information on the approach review the "Digital Intermediate" paper, (under LightTools, Technical Papers).
The following is a sample of projects in which Light Illusion has been involved. For additional on the work performed for these projects, be it on-set supervision, DI / colourist operation, or post-production supervision, contact steve@lightillusion.com, or see Steve's IMDB entry here.
Recent DI Projects
- Five Day Shelter
5DS Five Day Shelter is an Irish Indy production that decided to take advantage of the lower rates offered by performing the DI, vfx and lab processing and printing work in India, and Steve's experience working in India made Light Illusion the obvious choice as a partner to assist with the project, as well as having Steve perform the actual grading.
- Freight
Freight is a Red shot low budget film that used a very unique approach to DI by having the film post-produced in South India, with Steve working remotely from the production team, making much use of the internet to pass grading examples back and forth.
- Ninaitathale Inikkum
Ninaitathale Inikkum is a film that elevated the grading look of film post-produced in South India, with Steve working closely with cinematographer Balasubramaniam, in conjunction with the film's Director GNR Kumaravelan.
- Drona
Drona, a Hindi film directed by Goldie Behl, is a fantasy-action film starring Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Jaya Bachchan and Kay Kay Menon, shot 35mm, with all post-production being done at 4K, from VFX through to the final DI. Support for the film's digital workflow, as well DI Consultancy, was performed by Steve Shaw, Light Illusion.
- Brighton Wok: The Legend of Ganja Boxing
This is an amazing low-budget film that was shot on just about every HD and video camera format you can imagine. A nightmare, but great fun to grade, with all DI grading performed by Steve Shaw at Axis Post on their Quantel Pablo.
- Credo
This low budget Horror feature film is the first full feature from long-term associates of Light Illusion, Alto Films (see Daddy's Boy and Dark Communion). All camera kit was supplied by Axis Hire, with on-line post-production by Axis Post.
- Highlander: The Source
This was the second all Digital Cinematography feature film Light Illusion has been involved in with MotionFX, and was a 4 camera shoot, shooting in Lithuania again(!), with all data management performed by MotionFX and Light Illusion.
- Silence Becomes You
Silence Becomes You (SBY) was unique as it was the world's first 100% digital cinematography feature ilm!
To be quite blunt about it, no matter who else may claim to have shot the first Digital Cinematography film, SBY WAS the first. There were other films shot HD video before SBY, but HD video is not Digital Cinematography - SBY WAS A WORLD FIRST!
