The Light Illusion Gamma Curves have been used on a vast array of projects, from promos and tv commercials, to long-form episodic tv, to feature films.
The following are a selection of such projects, in no particular order, with comments from the users and clients, including links where possible.
Marc Windon - DoP, Australia www.marcwindon.com
Marc is one of the first Sony XDcam PWD-f800 users to work with the Light Illusion Gamma Curves. This was his initial response:
Have only been running tests at this stage, but have a 3 day shoot this week. The dynamic range (from the Light Illusion Gamma Curves) is incredible!
Helmut Brueker - Telescope Film, Germany. www.telescope-film.de
Our shoot with the Light Illusion Gama Curves for the f900 ran smooth and perfect. The client confirmed that color corrections in post worked out really great. They can just turn the lights on in post as they have never see it before :-)
So, all that I have learned about using the right Gamma Curves comes to reality! All involved people are happy with the material including myself.
Now I know how to get the best shots with my f900 camera. Thanks very much for your great suppprt Steve. With 25 psf it looks like Film quality without any typical video effects.
George Hupka - DoP, Canada. www.downstream.sk.ca
George, commenting on the very new 'MegaGamma' curves, developed specifically for George's shooting style and need to avoid later post-production grading.
"I noticed right away the new Light Illusion MegaGamma curves greatly improved colour on overexposed areas… particularly on the flesh-tones and blues, which is great news. Compared to the standard Sony Hyper-Gamma, this is a huge improvement - none of that ugly colour-shift on overexposed skin tones. Ditto with skies, the tendency for an overexposed sky to go cyan is greatly reduced."
And George goes on to add, "Of course, while remaining in the ITU-709 world for TV projects, this 'more graceful overexposure' is very useful for an F900R recording to HDCAM tape! If I need to preserve more overexposure detail then the Log curves are certainly better, but for a lot of everyday situations MegaGamma is ideal."
Geoff Boyle - DoP, UK. www.cinematography.net
Geoff commenting on a director's response to rushes he shot with the Light Illusion Gamma Curves for a BA commercial.
"Apparently he'd seen my BA rushes and was told that they were the easiest to grade that they'd ever had."
Geoff, has been a major user of the Light Illusion Gamma Curves, and is writing more info to add to his experience of using them as you read this - come back for more info soon! - Thanks Geoff
Sam Shinn - DoP. www.ironeye.com
Sam talking about using the Light Illusion Gamma Curves for an American public television program called 'Spain...on the road again' hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow and 3 others. A travel/food/culture show that travel Spain during Fall and Spring 2007/8, and is a 13 hours series. www.spainontheroadagain.com
"Our project traveled nearly 16,000 kilometers over the course of 9 weeks, and we often had 3 or 4 major setups every day. Moving around so much, I chose to keep our lighting package small; the biggest fixture we used were 800 HMIs to fight the bright Spanish sun. Without the use of the Light Illusion Gamma Curves, we would never have been able to hold the highlights, and see into the shadows. I would have needed a much more extensive lighting plan, which would have slowed us down so much it would have been unacceptable."
"Additionally, the curves gave us great color. The show looks great."
Ian Ellis - DoP, Austin TX. www.texashighdef.com
Ian commenting on a planned jewellery shoot:
"I am a regular user of one of your curves. In fact, I started using the gamma curve about the time they became publicly available on your website. Use it on all exteriors and many interiors. I've shot one short and a full length feature, and many commercials. As soon as I heard "diamonds", I knew the curve was going to be invaluable for the shoot."
David Hart - Senior Service Engineer, Sony Electronics Inc. mailto: david.hart@am.sony.com
David commenting on Sony Electronic's used of the Light Illusion Gamma Curves within their repair/service facility.
"Although we are not a production company by any means, I have used the Light Illusion Gamma Curves in F900s, HDCF950s and yes, in the F23. So, us Sony Guys in Los Angeles often use the Light Illusion Gamma Curves, even though we are a repair/service facility and not a production company."
Dan Mulligan - Owner/operator f23/f35 at Rogue Element Films. www.rogueelementfilms.com
Dan commenting on the 'video' Rec709 Gamma Curves, although he usually uses the 'Log' ones...
I'm not a fan of 709 I'm afraid, but your version pisses over the Rec709 in-built version Sony have pre-loaded in; it's pants capitol P... :-)
