Canon EOS Gamma Curves - Endorsements

The Light Illusion Canon EOS Gamma Curves have been used on a large number of projects, from film to tv work.

The following are a selection of comments from users, in no particular order.
It is also strongly suggested that you read this independent article written by Alfonso Parra, AEC, where he looks in-depth at the Light Illusion Canon EOS Gamma Curves.

Alfonso Parra, AEC, has written a second document looking in-depth at the new Light Illusion LOG Gamma Curve for the canon EOS cameras.

As usual I used Steve Shaw’s Light Illusion gamma curves for the 5D and 7D. I much prefer these curves to any of the looks I get out of the 5D’s built-in curves. Those work in a pinch, but Steve’s curves really make the camera look its best.

I used one of Steve Shaw’s Light Illusion gamma curves, probably #1. (Light Illusion curve #1 is great for low contrast situations as it adds a bit more “crunch” to the look. Curve #2 is better for high contrast situations as it flattens things out a bit. I haven’t found a use for curve #3. You can get all three, plus a new flatter log curve, for a very reasonable price at the Light Illusion website.)

I should point out that the reason I was able to push the footage around as much as I did has much to do with Steve Shaw’s excellent Canon 5D gamma curves.

Wow! It is a different camera. Thanks.

I just wanted to give a little feedback: I have just finished shooting a spec commercial. The entire first part was shot with your scene files for the D5 !!!
REALLY A GREAT TOOL... they are just amazing. No way around them if you backlight and do serious color work in post!!

Will use them anytime...

I've made a lot of tests with your Gamma Curves for the Canon and these little profiles are terrific!!! I get incredible files for the grading and the job is just real fun ! This make a big difference, and I do not get anymore the weird gradients that I use to get before... The first profile is my favourite to date...

Thanks a lot!

Jay Friesen
Steve, I love these! Thanks so much. I have to shoot a lot lower exposure now though than I'm used to but man, the results are so much better to work with!

I'm curious if anyone else is using this product? If not, I strongly recommend purchasing it. Prior to using the curves I was filming in many of the so called superflat settings commonly suggested by various technicians out there.

However, I wasn't fully satisfied with the results in post. The gamma curves have introduced a new personality into our camera and made grading work easier, particularly with skin-tones.

I'm more than satisfied with it.

I've shot two 7D projects, one with the Light Illusion curves and one without. I've seen the difference, and from now on I won't shoot a 5D or 7D project without them!

The band Pink Martini held a music video contest for their newly released album, and Art shot one of the entries using a Canon 7D, hard light and white mime makeup.

I was really impressed by how the curves held detail in the highlights. The white makeup could have been a disaster, but there's a lot of subtle detail visible in the talent's face and no sign of clipping. It really was a pleasant surprise.

Ulf Soderqvist - DoP, LA, USA. maddswede@me.com
I exclusively used Steve's curves on the feature film "And They're Off...". The bulk of the film was shot outside and in many of the scenes we had to deal with extremely wide latitude. Without the super flat curve, this would not have been possible.

Thank you Steve for making serious film making possible on the Canon 5D/7D!

Xavier Dolléans - DoP, Paris, France. www.xavierdolleans.fr
I shot some tests about the different picture profile available in the Canon 5D and I compared them to yours custom curves. I shot a X-Rite colour chart very simply and then I compared the footage with the waveform in the Scope Box software. Very basic method, because I didn't have the time to do big tests.

Your curves are really very good. Thank you for that.
For me the, 1 is enough, and I shot the whole short film last week with that one.
The 2 is very good too, better dynamic range I think and a very low saturated look, but it was too much for this project.

The number 3 seems to be quite different, and to have a different aim. May be I'm wrong but for me it's a kind of curve for low light situation when you don't have lights with you. This picture profile takes everything up: the bottom, the middle and the top of the curve.

(Note: as Xavier says, curve #3 is aimed at low-contrast scenes, and will potentially show noise...)

Jim Blokland - Editor, Toronto, Canada. www.blokland.com
Hi Steve, did some preliminary testing on the 1D MK IV and found the curves to be quite good. I especially like #1 and #2 for grading. I found #3 a bit noisier that I'd like, although I didn't have a very low-contrast scene to test on.

(Note: curve #3 is aimed at low-contrast scenes, and will potentially show noise...)

Ulf Soderqvist - DoP, LA. www.maddswede.com
Great work! It really helps me to get a wider range in the colour pass and also brings back the image to a less of the video harsh look.

Thanks for your good work, Ulf

Dermot Shane - Canada.
Many thanks, this is a real step forward with this camera.... man it's got to be just right, no room for close enough... but get it right and have curve 2 loaded and it's pretty amazing....

And Dermot went on to post on the CML the following:

"There are a few gamma curves around, Steve Shaw's are the best I have seen... by far and away the best..."

Gina Palmer - TechJunkie, USA. Gina Palmer
Did some preliminary tests of the #2 curve with charts; it certainly seemed to help make it so that the noise in the shadows was diminished until the last possible moment while pulling the levels up in After Effects.

Zander White - Photography, USA. www.zanderwhite.net
Great presets! Essentially these curves try and create a faithful (RAW like) jpeg. Anything that increases detail and bypasses camera applied contrast, sharpening, and saturation is fantastic.

I shoot jpeg occasionally when I do high volume/low importance shoots, but my workflow is primarily RAW...

I can see these working very well for the 5D MKII or 7D for HD video capture, as they don't do RAW video.
